Trophy Eyes – Suicide Pact (Track Of The Day, 28th February)

Trophy Eyes from Newcastle, Australia, poked hard at all of our feels with their 2016 released album, Chemical Miracle. “Suicide Pact” is one of those songs, telling a powerful story along with its melodic hardcore punk.

Musically and lyrically it speaks about a time of carefree rowdiness bordering on self-destruction (“I threw a bottle from the window, just to watch it break. It bounced and retained its shape, would my body do the same?”), and a promise…

We were just children when I held your hamd
I promised if you’d go, then I’d go the same.

What a stupid way to see,
If your friends will keep their promises.
Aren’t you getting tired of hospital beds?”

It’s beautifully written, hinting at the underlying pain (“..anything to break the silence”) without judgement, in a compassionate way (“I know the feeling, man. You can’t count the fuck-ups on two hands”).

But also carries the stance of “Enough, now”, describing the impact upon friends at seeing their mate be so self-destructive. John Floreani is a master at emotional vocals and he excels in this track, playing roles of the rowdy, the compassionate, and the friend giving a wake-up call.

The outro builds up brilliantly, again poking at the avoidance (“Like running water, what are you running from?”) and then finally falling into a vocal ’round’ style of lyric, repeating the earlier lyric:

What a stupid way to see,
If your friends will keep their promises.
Aren’t you getting tired of hospital beds?”

It’s an incredible track on an impressive album, from beginning to end. It’s worth giving “Suicide Pact” a spin as well as the rest of Chemical Miracle.

ps. Trophy Eyes are on tour in the US, and UK, including the Slam Dunk festival. More details on that HERE.
