Trophy Eyes – Home Is (Track Of The Day, 7th May)

Our Track Of The Day comes from Trophy Eyes‘ 2016 album Chemical Miracle; a firm favourite at Depth Magazine HQ.

On Chemical Miracle, “Home Is” sits awkwardly between the pop punk flavoured “Breathe You In” and the heavy and morbid “Miracle”. Despite their differences, all three songs speak about connection and a person’s existence mattering (or not).

“Home Is” carries a twangy 3/4 sound as it starts, beginning a description of an ongoing cycle of settling somewhere new, discomfort, then moving on. Never feeling at home; escape being option numero uno when things get too much.

“Make new friends who don’t know anything about you
It all starts making sense when you never found what you were looking for
It’s not a place but a person who feels like home”

Vocally “Home Is” carries the same emotional fire and genuineness we have come to love and expect from John Floreani, as well as heavy chaoticness by way of guitars and drums. The description of the cycle and leaving a trail of broken relationships behind feels just as emotionally hectic as the song sounds. The hecticness only seeming to be soothed by alcohol.

The closing minute of the song drops us back into 4/4 timing, seeming like a landing back on solid ground. It feels like ‘It’s completely messed up, but I’m here and I’m coping. Enough. For now’.

“I’ve got two legs over your arm rests
Cause I’m too tall for couch surfing
I fucking hate myself but I’ve got no scars on my forearms
I just can’t sleep until I’m fucking wasted”

Watch John, Jeremy, Andrew, Kevin and Callum perform “Home Is” when they toured here in Melbourne, or stream via Spotify.
