Hate Drugs – Afterimage (Track Of The Day, 28th May)

Our Track Of The Day today comes from Central Californian indie/surf rock five piece Hate Drugs. The band consists of David Caploe (lead vocals/guitar), Josiah Caploe (keyboards), Adrian Diaz (drums), John Irwin IV (bass), and Norman Lee (lead guitar).

We dove into “Afterimage”, a single released by Hate Drugs on 2nd April. This track is a trip, musically feeling (ironically) like freedom and sunshine despite the concept of the song describing being mentally ‘haunted’ by someone, and seeing them everywhere. The feelings about this situation escalating as the track goes on.

“Your photons trapped inside my head
You’re like an afterimage”

Toward the end of the track, there’s an interlude with guitars and keys as focus. This feels like vibrations rippling outward, the layering backwards and forwards becoming something of a containment. It’s a perfect way to move into a more passionate and heavy section of the song. The ‘I can’t get you out’ close to the track is a favourite part, feeling like a last gasp of expression.

The music video is also done really well expressing the afterimage concept with colour edits, ghosting and distortion.
